Oxford Based Car Manufacturer

Improving Water Quality At Large Car Manufacturing Plant

We helped a large car manufacturer reduce their water to drain, reduce their chemical usage and improve the quality of their water.

The Client: BMW (UK) Manufacturing Ltd – MINI Plant Oxford.

MINI Plant Oxford is a car manufacturing plant located in the Cowley area of Oxford, England. It produces close to 1,000 MINIs each day and employs more than 4,000 people.

The Challenge

BMW wanted to reduce their water to drain, reduce their chemical usage and improve the quality of their water.

The Solution

Our engineers spent a day at the site to get to grips with the problem and understand what was required. The next day, they returned with a proposal and explained their findings to the plant’s senior management team.

Not only was our solution designed to save money and generate long-term efficiencies, it made good use of the equipment already on site.

Our solution involved 2 stages:

Stage 1

  • Installing two 20,000 litre an hour Reverse Osmosis (RO) units
  • Fitting an 8,000 litre-an-hour Nano Filtration unit (to recycle the reject water from the RO units)

Stage 2

  • Installing two 30,000 litre-an-hour RO units
  • Removing the old existing Demin Plant
  • Moving the 20,000 litre an hour RO units and configuring them to run with the two 30,000 litre an hour RO units.
  • Recycling the reject water from all four RO’s with the Nano Filtration Unit.

The Results

An Energy Efficient Solution With Long Term Savings

Our engineers designed a bespoke solution which provided a long life cycle for these RO units, saving the client significant costs.

As A Result Of Our Expertise, This Solution Has Provided:

  • Minimised the use of chemicals and effluent discharge within its water supply
  • Minimised production disruption during installation
  • Plant efficiency (treated water v waste) >80%
  • More cost-efficient v Ion Exchange Plant
  • Stable supply of quality demineralised water
  • Reduced downtime
