You get us through the door: you pick up the phone to companies that have never heard of us, and turn a list of names into real conversations for our sales team.

This is a phone job first. There is a daily call target, and a good part of every day is spent talking to people you have never met. If that sounds like fun, read on. If it makes your stomach drop, this probably is not the role for you.

About Excel Water

Excel Water designs, builds, installs and services water treatment systems for industry. If a factory needs its water softened, purified or recycled before it can make food, medicine, beer or aircraft parts, that is us.

We have been doing it for over 30 years. Our customers are chemical plants, food and drink manufacturers, pharmaceutical sites, engineering firms and heavy industry across the UK. We are a small team, we are growing, and everybody here can see the difference their own work makes.

There are a lot of companies we should be talking to. We are looking for someone to start those conversations.

What you will actually be doing

Most of your day: outreach

  • Working through a list of target companies that we give you.
  • Ringing them. The phone is the heart of this job, and once you are fully trained you will have a daily target of around 40 calls. We build up to that over your first three months.
  • Getting past the switchboard and finding the right person, usually the engineering, maintenance or operations manager.
  • Following up by email and LinkedIn, so the people you call hear from us more than once.
  • Finding out whether there is something we can help with, and booking a call or site visit with our sales lead when there is.
  • Logging every call and what happened in our customer system, so nothing gets lost.

Supporting our sales lead

  • Booking appointments and site visits, and keeping the sales diary running.
  • Keeping customers and prospects updated on their behalf: confirmations, information people have asked for, follow-ups.
  • Chasing quotes we have sent out and finding out where they have got to.
  • Getting things ready before sales calls and visits: who the company is and what we have done for them before.

Everyday marketing

  • Posting on our social media, mainly LinkedIn, from a plan we give you. It means the people you ring have often already seen our name.
  • Collecting testimonials from happy customers and helping turn them into posts.
  • Gathering photos and details from jobs we have done, so there is always something new to share.

New enquiries

  • You will be the main sales contact in the office. When an enquiry comes in by phone, email or our website, you take the details, log them and pass them to the right person.
  • We do not get a flood of these, so it is a small part of the week. When one does arrive, it matters that it is handled quickly and well.

What we are looking for

The things that matter

  • You enjoy picking up the phone and talking to somebody you have never met.
  • You do not take a polite “no thanks” personally, and you are happy to pick up the phone again straight after one.
  • You like having a target and knowing whether you hit it.
  • You are organised, and the things you say you will do actually get done.
  • You write clearly enough to send an email to a customer without anybody checking it first.
  • You are curious about how things work, including quite technical things.
  • You are reliable and you turn up.

The things that do not matter

  • Experience in water treatment. Almost nobody has it. We will teach you.
  • A degree, or which subjects you took.
  • Sales experience. If you have some, great. If you have none, we would rather teach you our way of doing it.

If you have worked in a call centre, retail, hospitality, a gym or anywhere else where you had to talk to people all day, that is genuinely relevant experience and we would like to hear about it.

What you get

  • £12.91 an hour, which is £25,175 a year, reviewed at six months and again at twelve.
  • A performance bonus linked to your outreach, paid monthly, worth around £10,000 a year on target.
  • 20 days holiday plus bank holidays.
  • Pension, death in service cover and private medical cover after probation.
  • A training budget of £750 a year and the time to use it. We will support a professional qualification if you want one.
  • Proper training from people who have been in this industry a long time.
  • Room to grow in the direction you choose. For now, the job is filling our sales pipeline. Longer term, we want this role to grow towards sales, marketing or our products, depending on where your interest takes you.
  • Free parking, and a team who will actually answer your questions.

How to apply

Send your CV to sales@excelwater.co.uk with a short note. A few lines is plenty. Tell us:

  1. What you would say in the first thirty seconds of a phone call to a company that has never heard of us.

We read every application and we reply to everybody. If you look like a good fit we will ring you for a fifteen-minute chat, because the phone is most of this job.
