Meet the team – Engineering Director, Darren Field
We lead by example and one of the reasons we’re able to do this is because our team is made up of some of the best commercial water treatment experts around. Fortunately for us, many of them have been a part of the Excel Water family for a while, and this includes our highly experienced and knowledgeable Engineering Director, Darren Field.
Let’s find out a bit more about what he does and why he still enjoys working for us so much after a quarter of a century of being a part of the team…
Q. How long have you worked at Excel Water for?
A. For 25 years.
Q. What does your work involve?
A. It’s incredibly varied. Some days, I can be quoting for new jobs, organising our team of engineers and training new staff, other days, I’ll be problem-solving, resourcing new equipment and generally helping out with the running of the business.
Q. What’s the most important aspect of your job?
A. Making sure our jobs are completed to the highest standard and within the agreed objectives. Training engineers and making sure they understand the systems is also an important part of my role. I help them develop their expertise and ensure they can problem solve on their own.
Q. How many people do you manage and what are their roles?
A. I’m responsible for overseeing all of our engineers. This includes our engineering manager, as well as our apprentices, so that’s five people in total. I also manage the office staff ensuring work is booked in correctly and we have all the parts for a specific job.
Q. What’s the most challenging water treatment problem you’ve solved over the years?
A. There was one situation in which I had to treat some very difficult water from a borehole for a company. The water contained extremely high levels of various contaminants and needed a variety of treatment. Our solution was to build a control panel that controlled the various aspects. We also supplied the company with several types of specialist equipment, which included tanks and pumps.
Q. What’s the most common issue you help clients with?
A. Not understanding commercial water treatment, how it works and how it can impact their end result. Many businesses don’t realise their water supply can impact quality control and we help them get to grips with the benefits of commercial water treatment systems.
Q. What’s your proudest achievement so far?
A. Taking the original design of the demin plant and then making it work more efficiently and improving the look of the unit.
Q. How do you see commercial water treatment evolving?
A. I think there’ll be more borehole extracting and private supply treatment for companies for industrial use. I can also see there being developments in the use of artificial intelligence for water treatment too.
Q. On a final note, what do you enjoy the most about working for Excel Water?
A. I love the team, their enthusiasm and the variety of challenges that commercial water treatment brings!
